How to Build Food Motivation in Dogs

Using food treats as rewards are quick, efficient, calming and offer the opportunity for multiple repetitions for teaching behaviours. Food is especially useful for rewarding calmer behaviours involving less movement such as Stay, Settle and Leave.

However not all dogs are as motivated by food as they are other rewards. You can train food motivation when necessary by using your dogs preferred reward (toys, sniffing, playing, scratches) we can teach them to take food as a reinforcer.

Training
Feed your dog a high value treat in a comfortable and low distraction environment and then immediately offer their preferred reward. Soon the treat will predict their preferred reward which makes the treat rewarding in itself!
