People often assume that if a dog is wearing a muzzle, it's aggressive.
That's not what goes through my mind.
As a dog trainer and owner of a previously muzzled dog, when I see a muzzled dog, I usually think, "Good on you."
I see someone who's being considerate of the people and dogs around them.
I see someone who's taking responsibility for their dog's needs, whatever those may be. Maybe their dog is nervous. Maybe they eat things they shouldn’t. Maybe they're in pain, grouchy, or legally required to wear a muzzle. The reason doesn't really matter.
What matters is that their guardian has made a sensible choice to keep everyone safe, despite the judgment that may surround them.
A muzzle is just another safety tool. We shouldn't judge someone for wearing a cycling helmet or putting a seatbelt on. This isn't any different.
The only thing I hope people do when they see a muzzled dog is give them a bit of space and let them get on with their walk.
If you catch their eye, offer them a smile. They will have already spent months muzzle training and helping their dog feel safer in the world. They might be working through training. They might simply be following the law. Whatever the reason, they're out there doing the right thing instead of pretending there's no issue.
I'd much rather see a dog wearing a muzzle than someone taking unnecessary risks.
So, the next time you see a muzzled dog, don't jump to conclusions. Give them space and a smile. You never know how much that small gesture might mean.
